It’s not about me

I went to lunch with a friend today. That does not seem like much, but if I told you drove 7 hours Friday evening to have lunch with me Saturday afternoon; only to drive back 7 hours immediatley following our lunch…you may say wow! I did! He worked with me this past year with the youth ministry as the Jr. high leader up until he moved to California this past March to pursue an assitant pastor position at his home church. He is doing well and it was great to see him before I head back east next week.

He called me and told me he wanted to meet me for lunch at our usual spot…which was the Panda House Stir Fry! Absolutley the best stir fry ever and it is a BUFFET, so how could you go wrong. I thought he was kidding, but he wasen't he got in Friday evening and we had lunch at noon on Saturday…then just as he said, he started his trip back to CA at 1:45!

So why do I tell you that? Well, he asked me a question. He asked, "What is the most important lesson you have learned in ministry?" Without delay I said, "It's not about me!" Once I said it, my mind went back to Denver 2005, our area youth convention with the Wesleyan Church. I had 7 adult sponsors with me and 5 of them were complaining because they did not want to go to the concerts and the extra stuff they had going on. So I pulled them all together and told them that this was not a vacation for them…that their attitude needed to reflect a desire to be there and to participate because if the teens noticed that we didn't want to "be there" then they would not want to either. And then I told them, "This is not about you! It is about these teens and what God is going to do in their lives!"

We all have our times when we don't want to do something…I know I have been there. But as a pastor if every time I felt like not going to church and preaching or someone called and wanted counsel and I didn"t want to listen to them, then my ministry would fall by the way side. The truth is, I have felt this way many times, however I need to stop, pray and remind myself that this…the life God has called me to…is not about me! It's about the message, it's about a mission, it's about the masses, and it is about a Messiah; who loves and cares for the hearts of each person we come in contact with on a daily basis!

As I sit here my mind has gone back to my lunch today with my friend. I realize that when I told him that the most important lesson I have learned in ministry to date was "It's not about me," he already has learned that or at least is living it. He didn't have to come 7 hours to meet me for lunch…with gas prices as high as they are and getting in late Saturday night and having to be at church early the next morning…but he did anyway. Because obviously when it was all said and done, he knew, it was not about me.

Thanks Greg!

It’s A Girl…Again!

I am convinced that I will never have a boy and I am really okay with that. God has blessed me with three beautiful girls in my life and I am excited about adding one more to the mix. The truth of the matter is…I have no "man jam." Excuse me if I have offended anyone…but they do say it is the guys fault if it is not a boy…so there you go. I just stated what you were already thinking…hahaha!

So I leave you with the evidence that I will be having yet another girl. May I add one more time, I am okay with this, really. Thank you for sharing with me in this joy.

Six Flags Trip

Well, I just got back from our Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip with the teens late Tuesday night. We had a great time, but I must say, it was bitter sweet. It was my last trip with "my" teens and selfishly wish it did not end. I am going to miss this group so much, however I do know that I am going in the direction that the Lord wants me to. (Please check out some pictures in my Flickr Section.)
We have made a lot of memories the past three years and during this three day trip we were able to "stroll down memory lane" multiple times throughout the trip. If any of the teens are reading this…I am going to miss you so much, but we will be able to keep each other updated through things like (im, email and this blog site.)

The trip was a blast we spent all day monday at six flags trying to ride every roller coaster possible (which I must say we did a pretty good job at.) Then we spent tuesday afternoon at Mission Beach in San Diego. It was a little cloudy and the water was only 65 degrees, but we made the best of it. Shaina, you are awesome, you definetley rode the longest wave on your "boogy board," congratulations! I have to admit I was hesitant on going on this trip because of all the stuff I had to do to get ready to move, but I would not have traded it for the world! Foothills Teens are awesome and I love them so much.

If you are reading this and you don't know anyone from Foothills and you think this post is not worth your time reading, here is a life lesson. It actually will go right along with my good friend Chris Humby and his latest post. With everyone you meet, take advantage of the opportunity to invest in them. Be a super hero to the people God has put in your path…because you will find that when you invest in them that your life will have meaning. Too often we live our lives in shallow water…we don't allow ourselves to get close with anyone. I am so glad that I have poured out my heart to these teens because I have learned something…sometimes you will invest in them and you will become their super hero and other times they rescue right back becasue they care and they know you do to.

I am so glad that I have shared these experiences with them. Enjoy your life and the people around you…they are your greatest investment. Thanks Chris!

New Look Already?

Yeah, I did not like the other design, it was too serious looking. So if you are on this page and you are wondering if you are at the right place…you are…so relax! And for those of you who really did find this by accident…get off this site immediatley, it is not for your eyes. No, actually stay and enjoy, I don't have much, but what I have I give you…hahaha…My life is an open book. Ok, I will stop now, this is really going nowhere. I just wanted to write something. So there you go, something to waste your time reading…you can thank me later, really. I would like to leave you with this picture…I believe it explains my life right now.

A Long Way To Go!
